what's on offer
Some smart tariffs could be cheaper than standard meter tariffs. Unless there is a good reason not to, suppliers must install a smart meter if they are:
- Replacing a meter.
- Installing a meter for the first time, such as in a new property.

what's on offer
1. Energy suppliers are installing smart meters as part of a central government programme to replace older energy meters.
2. The smart meter package includes a:
- Smart electricity and gas meter.
- In-home display, which tells you about your energy usage in pounds and kWh.
- Communications hub, which sends and receives information over a secure network from the smart meter to your in-home display and to your supplier so they can take remote readings and bill you accurately.

2. You will be put on a default tariff when:
- Your fixed rate tariff ends.

3. You are probably on a default tariff if you haven’t switched suppliers in the last year, or you’ve never checked what tariff you’re on.

what's on offer
1. You can switch with debts of up to £500 on gas and £500 on electricity.
2. The supplier you switch to will take on the debt and you will repay them instead. This happens under a ‘Debt Assignment Protocol’. You will agree the terms of your repayment plan in your contract with them. Ofgem rules mean repayment plans must be realistic and affordable for you.
3. Prepay meter tariffs are usually more expensive. You may want to ask about the different options available to you, including changing to a standard meter. Most suppliers offer this for free.
